The Left Seat

by Jim Slade

The World's Third Largest Air Force

Some ironies are too good to resist. Here's one: The world's third largest Air Force also exists on US soil.

Inside of the same week, three friends..John Bauer, Bob Button and Don Ankerson..sent these pictures of the famous "Boneyard" at Davis-Monthan Air Force base, Tucson, Arizona. I hadn't been there in a long time, so it brought back some sad old memories. As Don pointed out, it is not only the third largest air force in the world, but it's the only unit in the USAF that makes a profit since spare parts can be found there..whole airplanes, for that matter.

"The Left Seat" column is usually reserved for commentary, but I'll let these pictures speak mostly for themselves. Nothing I could say would tell it any better.

B52s, laid out (per treaty) for Soviet satellites to count.

Fighters as far as the eye can see.

Closer-up.

Old dogs who served well.

Just thought you'd like to see it here. When you're out there, stop by for a visit..and a salute.
