AOPA FLY-IN & OPEN HOUSE A BIG, WET SUCCESS

by Jim Slade

A lousy day for birds.

It was strictly IFR, but the birds, birdmen and birdwomen showed up anyway.

The AOPA's 14th annual Fly-In and Open House had big crowds who shopped, attended seminars and even trudged through the rain at Frederick, Maryland's airfield to inspect the fleet parked in the display area.

The following is a photo tour:

AOPA President Phil Boyer explains what the organization is campaigning for on Capitol Hill and at the FAA. He says the small aviator needs a break in today's tight security. He acknowledged the need for heightened vigilance, but hoped for a more reasonable approach to the little guy.

Great stuff for sale..and everybody wants one. But which one?

The competition.

Now, that's aviation art!

Need aviation jewelry? Dan Hamilton, of Madison, WI is your man. Dan makes earrings, necklaces, brooches..a design for almost every airplane. He says the biggest sellers are Cessna 172s and 182s. He's doing a lot of military aircraft these days. Dan says he's been at Oshkosh for the last 29 years. He's also going to the Reno Air Races this year.

Dan Hamilton's baubles, bangles and bright shiny airplanes.

How serious do you want to get? Major vendors, major merchandise.

One of Aviation's best 'How-To' writers, the great Rod Machado autographs a fan's book.

Lousy weather, great show.

See you next year at Frederick.
Phil Boyer promises it won't rain.
